Writing

At St Mary's, writing skills are developed through a high-quality text based approach which inspires children to write with enthusiam and purpose.

Exploration - Children will explore a wide range of literature including fiction, poetry, drama and non-fiction texts to inspire and support their own writing

Co-operation - Children will share their ideas for writing with others and use the feedback of adults and peers to improve their own writing.

Communication - Children will understand that talking and framing their ideas orally is the first step in planning their writing. They will also come to understand the numerous ways in which writing helps then to convey their ideas, thoughts, emotions, imagination, knowledge and information.

Innovation - Children bring their knowledge of a wide range of texts to help improve their own writing. Over time they will understand the importance of the drafting process to improve their writing and begin to develop their own style and 'voice' on paper.

 Children's confidence in writing is underpinned by their developing phonic skills and phonic sessions allow regular opportunities for children to practise their writing and develop early spelling, grammar and punctuation skills.
